The setting of the story is the lake where the boys love to hang out. Quite often there are pretty girls who are on the beach. During the time the boys are scared, it becomes a hiding place for the narrator and the woods nearby become a hiding place for his friends.

The theme perceived is that being bad isn't always good. They dream of being bad and it is almost romanticized like a movie. The boys learn otherwise through several deadly mishaps. There is a price to pay for being bad.

The story takes place at an old farm house owned by Calixta and Bobinot.

Our main character is a woman who lives alone and enjoys visiting the park each Sunday where she can listen and observe other people. She lives vicariously through them and their conversations. She has no life of her own to speak about. Going to listen to the music in the park each Sunday allows her to come alive with all the activity. She enjoys men, but is very critical of women.
